Laurie Shields entered UTS in 1910 and was a member of the Cadets. He enlisted in September 1914 at the first call for volunteers, joining the Central Ontario Regiment of the Canadian Infantry. He was the first of the UTS boys to die, being killed in the Battle of Ypres during the German gas attack at Langemark, where he and fellow UTS student Hugh Cleal were among the 2000 Canadian dead. His body was never recovered, and he is commemorated on the Menin Gate at Ypres.
